Problem:
This alternative arts festival wanted an identity that combated existing festival aesthetics and instead shot for something eye-catching, inviting, and even a little unnerving.
Solution:
The direction that I landed on for this arts festival was informed by the the idea of "the abyss staring back", an idea lifted from Friedrich Nietszche's "Beyond Good and Evil". Great art is about standing out from a system, and so for this brief that called for an interesting and dynamic design, I devised a rigid grid structure, only to defy it with amorphous spot colour graphics and a disntinctive logotype. I posited the suggestion that, in the face of reactionary politics and pigeonholing of the arts, this festival is an act of staring back at those who scrutinise art from an ivory tower.
